Yum! This recipie was really adept for a quick dinner. (Although it definitely needed some tweaking) I used half-dozen servings of potatoes to merely barely cover the 9x13. I added chopped onions to the beef, and cooked the macaroni for about x minutes (until it was done) while adding a piffling water every few minutes to continue it from burning. I likewise put gravy over the beef mix, and I put cheese over the potatoes. It turned out smashing!

We found the noodles & potatoes to be redundant so I used ane 10 oz box of frozen mixed veggies instead (I partially thawed them 1st). Too, we found this to exist also bland for our tastes so I added worcestershire sauce, onion powder, pepper & a couple shakes of Tabasco for more season. half-dozen servings of potatoes left a thin frosting on top. I volition use viii servings the next time.

what can y'all say bad about this recipe? Everyone likes it and it'southward super easy to make after a long 24-hour interval at piece of work. Plus, you can customize it according to your tastes or what you happen to have on hand that day. I e'er add corn & mushrooms. I too, similar other reviewers, brand more potato's than the recipe calls for. I've found that making a serving for 6 (co-ordinate to the box) covers a 9x13 pan perfectly. We as well add the cheese during the final 10 min'due south of blistering - simply plenty to melt it. Great recipe for a common cold winter's twenty-four hour period !! Thanks Cathy

I used Onion Soup mix (store didn't have beef onion season) and it worked out fine. I made enough mashed potatoes for x servings (according to product box) - and that was just right. ii cups of mashed potatoes is definitely non enough to encompass a 13x9 pan. I added 1 tin of corn, and 1 can of green beans, and topped it all off with both paprika and shredded cheddar cheese. I found that 1 ane/2 pounds of basis beef was the perfect amount. Husband loved information technology, information technology was very flavorful and a great condolement food!
10/17/2005
This recipe was simple and super piece of cake. I added 1 tin can diced tomatoes and used real mashed potatoes instead of instant, added frozen mixed vegetables and I put shredded cheese on top of hamburger mixture before putting mashed potatoes in. I will brand this i'm sure over and once again...
05/30/2001
I had to employ Beef Onion Soup Mix too. This was very good simply I would add some vegetables to it the adjacent time i make it.
09/15/2006
My family loved this. I did not utilize paprika. Instead I put shredded cheddar cheese on superlative. It was very proficient.
06/21/2000
Very tasty dish that is quick & like shooting fish in a barrel to brand. I used ii lbs ground beefiness and added some carrots (cubed), canned green beans and corn to brand the dish more colorful. Onion soup mix (1 packet) gave the dish a practiced flavour. Idaho instant potatoes worked very well and was a peachy time-saver. I used about 8 cups of mashed potatoes in order to get a decent amount to spread on top of the beef mixture (my 9x13 baking dish was full). This is a great one-dish repast!
05/22/2006
Easy and tasty! The best kind of recipe! I did add cheese to the acme but I remember this time I am going to put the cheese betwixt the meat and potatoes. We all loved this one.
07/10/2007
This is yummy comfort nutrient, but I'm giving it three stars because I had to make some changes. Later reading the reviews, here'due south what I did: used 1 1/2 pounds of beef, boiled the noodles separately for 8 minutes (to al dente), added ane tin can of foam of mushroom and 1 cup of frozen mixed vegetables to the beef, noodle, onion soup mix, and I topped information technology with 10 servings of instant mashed potatoes and shredded colby jack cheese. Without the cream of mushroom soup, I call up it would be good served with beef gravy. Like I said, this is yummy comfort food!
03/22/2007
delicious definitely a keeper
09/01/2011
Quick, easy, and yummy!!Followed the reciped for the virtually part with just a few modifications: added canned mushrooms and a can of corn to the meat mixture before putting it in the baking dish. Placed a thin layer of cheese onto the meat mixture and covered with the potatoes per reviewers used 6-eight cups so information technology would comprehend the height of the casserole. Sprinkled paprika and afterwards baking for 10 minutes covered peak with cheese baked for another 10 minutes. Turned out great!! If you don't want any crunch in your mix, don't add corn. If you like the crunch corn is the way to become!
01/22/2006
I am always looking for hearty inexpensive adept casseroles then this ane got my attention. Not my fav. My husband actually liked it. Maybe adding a tin can of cream of mushroom to the basis beef mixture would've helped?
02/01/2006
I idea this was fantabulous. Quick, easy and full of flavor. I added corn & left out the paprika. We actually enjoyed information technology. Thanks.
03/09/2007
This was but an "okay" dish for me. It was a fleck bland even after calculation veggies and cheese. Needs more than spices. Very easy to fix though.
09/03/2011
The only affair I did different was add shredded cheddar cheese between the meat and potato layer. All my husband had to say about it was, "At present that's a meal!"
07/10/2007
I haven't made this however it sounds really good! My coment is the the person who said that any dish made with beef should non take "Shepard" in the proper noun. Well, "Sheprds" Pie has been around a long time and always has beefiness.
03/20/2001
My family unit admittedly loved it!!! This is one of the most easiest dinners to ready. I followed a previous recommendation and fabricated more potatoes than the recipe chosen for. Information technology was DELICIOUS!!! I was able to find the Knorr beef with onion soup mix someone suggested. I will definitely serve this the next time I need to make a quick dinner.
12/21/2011
Liked information technology the commencement time. Got old past the 3rd time.
08/10/2011
My family loved this...cheers!
01/xvi/2002
This was a dandy, easy recipe. I spiced it up a bit and added carrots and corn. Oh yes, and I too made wayyy more potatoes than the recipe chosen for and it was perfect (made viii cups instead of two). Perfect when you don't accept much time and want something groovy. Awesome comfort food.
01/08/2001
This recipe was very skillful even my kids liked information technology. I fabricated information technology in the afternoon and warmed up for dinnertime. Definetely doing this one again.
01/05/2012
This was great and I unremarkably don't like Shepherd'south Pie. I added some dried onion and garlic powder when browning the meat. I also added a can of mixed veggies and cheddar cheese before adding the potatoes. I will for sure be making this again.
03/12/2000
I couldn't observe beef noodle mix, so I used beefiness onion soup mix and added corn and green beans. My husband loved it and then did I!
09/ten/2002
This recipe was VERY easy and my family ate it pretty well. It is a great recipe to accept on hand for those quick dinner nights. I felt similar at that place was something missing, but couldn't figure it out. I did add corn and cheese per other suggestions, making information technology a whole repast. I will make this over again.
01/27/2002
Maybe some actress noodles, but other than that, this is excellent!
x/06/2002
This was easy and tasty. I,however, added 1 can pinto beans as a layer on top of the beefiness, sprinkled with bacon bits, and added some shredded cheese on meridian of the potatoes. I like this recipe because yous can do then much with it every bit far equally flavoring.
07/28/2001
Recipe is pretty skillful and quick. Instead of mashing the potatoes, I cutting the raw potatoes (peeled) in round thin slices (Scalloped) mixed in a mushroom soup and spreaded on top of the beefiness mixture(Cooked beef, pasta, carrots, corn, peas, beans and tomato soup). Tasted first-class and my husband and kids loves it.
07/10/2007
This is a quick meal to make and it was very tasty. Well, it was either noodles or the mashed potatoe because that'south just besides much starch for my family and then I went with intant potatoes. As well used 1 1/2 lbs. of basis beef. Added green beans to the mix and used the instant onion soup mix only added some low sodium beef broth as information technology was turning a little dry. Also, I used a large cast iron skillet to simmer everything and after topping with the potatoes I just popped the iron skillet into the oven to bake. Next time I will add some shredded cheddar to top the potatoes.
08/26/2011
My husband was really skeptical, this is not real shepherds pie, but he loved information technology. I halved the recipe for 2 but needed to add a lilliputian more than h2o to cook the macaroni. I used homemade onion soup mix from this site (easy to one-half) and besides added a fiddling milk and cornstarch to thicken it up before baking it. I made homemade mashed potato'south using three and information technology all fit actually well in my small round corningware dish. Topped with a chip of cheese too. NO LEFT OVERS :)
01/05/2006
I really had high hopes for this recipe! Simply I found information technology quite dry. Just changes I made were to use leftover homemade mashed potatoes and added some frozen mixed veggies and cheese. It was a little better for leftovers when I added some beefiness gravy. I wouldn't brand this once again, though.
11/09/2005
My family unit loves this! Super easy! Our 5 year old daughter calls it "Murphy Cake". I add ane cup frozen peas and utilize rotelle noodles (that's what I happened to take on hand the first time I made this). Always comes out practiced. Cheers for sharing this ane. Very easy to tweak for a gluten free repast too.
02/01/2012
Turned out really adept! I was surprised at how good it was - and everyone loved it, even my VERY picky 18-month old :)
08/15/2002
Simple comfort food great for a busy melt! Thanks so much Cathy!
04/11/2005
I'm giving this recipe three stars because my husband really liked it. I found it bland and dry and didn't really enjoy it. I will make it again though, since my husband actually liked it. Mayhap information technology just needs a little tweaking to appeal to me. Thanks though for submitting the recipe.
10/28/2001
Easy and tasty. Bravo!!!!
09/20/2007
i thought this recipe was pretty proficient. i added an onion to the beef, topped westward/ garlic mashed potaotes and melted some cheddar cheese on top at the terminate...this added alot! good base to a adept comfort food recipe. :)
08/26/2011
Very simple and very good! I had to use regular onion soup mix and egg noodles because that's all I had. This will be in our regular rotation...so glad I tried it!
10/09/2002
Yum! I really liked this recipe. I followed some of the other suggestions and added extra (instant) mashed potatoes, 1 chopped reddish potato, corn, carrots and cheddar cheese on top. My fiance (who is by and large a very picky eater) loved it.
04/26/2011
A huge hit! Best part was that between this & Martha's Veg. Beef Soup, I got 2 meals from nigh identical ingredients. Didn't have noodles; used one-time frozen hash browns. Added frozen mixed vegetables. Couldn't be an easier recipe.
08/06/2012
I try non to charge per unit annihilation unless I tried it as written, I was tempted to add to this but I didn't. I gave it three stars because my coiffure likes boring bland food and there was no leftovers, I though it was awful.
07/28/2007
Neat Comfort Food! I followed several rater suggestions: added slice onion, garlic pulverization and worchester sauce. Cooked the noodles til al dente. When assembling, added cheese between the beef mixture and mashed potatoes (6 cups covered 9x13). Got raves reviews! It'south a keeper!
12/17/2002
Needed dinner in a pinch i night, whipped this up and it was a big hit! My husband and 1 year quondam daughter loved it. I didn't accept the beef stew mix, so I used a can of cream of celery and reduced the hot water by ane/2cup. I added a little cayenne pepper to the meat/soup/noodle mix. Later adding the potatoes, I sprinkled shredded cheddar and the paprika over the whole matter. Information technology was Then good! I'll be making this again.
01/25/2009
reheats well for lunch and fifty-fifty freezes well.
01/14/2001
I actually liked this one. Instead of the onion soup mix I used cream of mushroom soup. Very good and a family pleaser!
01/xi/2001
This is a very good recipe! I added a little more potato than what is called for here. My young man loved it and wanted the leftovers for lunch the side by side day.
09/20/2005
Very skillful and simple!
07/12/2007
Keen dish especially if you're hungry. 14 yr one-time son gave information technology a 4*. Sauteed onion with the beef. Couldn't find beefiness-onion soup mix so I combined onion soup mix with beef boullion powder. Added canned (x2) mushrooms to the mix in the skillet. Used powdered mash on top. Inexpensive, filling, flavorful meal. Note: left-overs had much more season, taste!
08/23/2011
Pretty good, My daughter doesn't like Shepherd's Pie so the second time I made this I cooked the beef mixture as directed just added two garlic cloves, so added 2 tbspns of floor with a cup of milk, cooked information technology over a depression heat and cooked the potatoes on the side (not boxed) and then it was a huge hit! My picky teenage daughter even went dorsum for seconds and that NEVER happens! Cheers for the idea!
02/13/2001
Yummy! We loved this recipe. Definately a keeper. We also added some veggies. Will employ over again.
09/12/2004
Very like shooting fish in a barrel. variations - used more noodles (1.5 full cups), added layer of corn layer of beans, fresh cut up tomatoes and zucchini (cooked a little with the meat),instant potatoes for 8 servings, and cheddar cheese on tiptop. Fantastic!
03/28/2000
I have made this reipe several times since viewing it and information technology goes over great everytime! Knorr makes a beef noodle with meatballs dry out mix. Works peachy.
10/10/2005
I idea this was a smashing recipe, and my family loved it! I substituted the soup mix with grilled onions and it turned out swell.
07/11/2007
I rated this a four only because I changed/added some things for a better flavour. Very tasty - a nice twist on the sometime version. I used 1/two beef broth and 1/2 water and I cooked the macaroni with the hamb and broth for 10 minutes. At 5 minutes the macaroni was nevertheless difficult. I added corn to the hamb mixture and I sprinkled some Colby/Jack cheese on tiptop of the mashers. Without the beef broth and cheese information technology would have been a petty banal for my family.
10/24/2004
I contradistinct the recipe. I added string beans to the meat. Also instead of manifestly noodles I used mac and cheese and layered information technology. On top of the mashed potatoes I added shredded cheddar, and sprinkled grated parm. cheese. But what I retrieve adds a nice touch is, when it's done baking, put information technology in the broiler. Just long enough for the cheese to go a bit well-baked, and bubbly brown. It looks nicer and taste ameliorate!
02/24/2001
Like shooting fish in a barrel and proficient. I added some chopped carrots to the meat mixture and used onion soup mix because that's all I could find. My family loved it, definately a keeper.
07/03/2001
a big hit with the family unit. i used the leftovers from the previous night, real mashed potatoes and some roasted carrots. yum!!!
01/07/2002
Not too bad, a little dry out. If I make this again I volition omit the noodles.
03/05/2000
we added mixed veggies, and all we could find for dry beef noodle mix was pasta roni stroganoff, we used ane/two the noodles and seasoning and put the other one/2 in the closet for the side by side fourth dimension, because my family was suprisingly pleased with this simple meal.
04/25/2006
We enjoyed information technology but I didn't have any onion soup mix so i used spices, onions and garlic to season information technology, but was a little bland nevertheless. I had to use twice every bit much potatoes as it called for and twice the noodles as well. Will make again but maybe utilize cream of "something" next fourth dimension.
07/ten/2007
Great, easy recipe that is child friendly. I used ground turkey and the onion soup mix added enough season. Topped with shredded cheddar cheese, this is a keeper! Cheers.
08/16/2009
It was good however nothing actually spectacular virtually it. If you would similar just something quick for dinner, it is perfect. Cheers.
04/03/2012
Very quick, like shooting fish in a barrel and delicious!
10/07/2001
I don't know what all the fuss is near except that this is like shooting fish in a barrel. Not much flavor and was disappointed. Next time, I will have to doc it upwards severely...possibly some tomato sauce, more than seasoning, more noddles, definitely needs veggies. Overall, very bland. This would exist something I'd apply once more if very desperate and take the ingredients on manus.
10/08/2005
The recipe would accept been better without the soup mix, fabricated everything a bit as well salty, but otherwise very delicious and very filling.
05/16/2000
This recipe is a variation on an old favorite of mine. It's VERY uncomplicated to make, and is something the whole family tin can savour. This variation is more colorful and less bland than other kinds of shepherd'due south pie. I dear it!
01/13/2002
Tastes Better than it looks!
03/xiii/2010
I myself am very picky when it comes to what I volition and won't eat. I enjoyed this except for the beef w/ onion soup mix. I just used beef buillon cubes instead. Still very delicious!
09/01/2011
was very good fabricated it for the family and they all wanted more than. Will make again
x/07/2009
Nosotros admittedly Dear this recipe! Nosotros do add worchister sauce, cheese, corn and some peas! We think the cheese taste best between the meat and mash potatoes.
11/18/2012
I idea this was pretty good for a quick, cheap week night meal. I doubled the recipe for my family of 5 + leftovers and had a really full 9x13 pan. I used regular onion soup and 2 burgoo cubes. Wanted to brand homemade mashed potatoes but in a time crisis used boxed. Didn't measure out the corporeality of potatoes I put on elevation, just piled them on. I would say if your meat mix is a little salty but cut dorsum on the salt in the potatoes. Information technology balances out well that way. I last thing I put a few pats of butter on peak the potatoes.
10/xiii/2007
My entire family of picky eaters loved it. I was interesting, information technology was bland AND spicy. I'm use to information technology the tastes existence incorporated into everything, similar a marinade the noodles were the near bland, simply regardless, it is something I would and will brand again with experiments in tweaking.
08/21/2009
Used about 2x the potatoes (we Dearest them) and a bit more meat (I had 1.3 lbs). It was wonderful. Practiced ol condolement nutrient. Husband & I had for dinner & lunch the next day. We both loved it. Too, had misc stuff I wanted to use upwards - so put shaved parm cheese in potatoes, cheddar cheese & fried onions on top. With or without these additions it would accept been great. Easy!!
09/17/2014
Wow! Such an easy and cheap recipe. I was admittedly amazed at how easy this was, and how well the flavors composite together. This is definitely a nifty weeknight dinner since it doesn't take long at all to make.
01/24/2004
This was a very like shooting fish in a barrel and yummy recipe that I was able to make using ingredients I normally go along on hand. I substituted ground turkey for the ground beef, used 3 cups of instant mashed potatoes instead of ii, and sprinkled shredded Cheddar cheese over the top before baking. Delicious!
ten/08/2013
Then easy and and so skilful!! I exercise add a little tomato paste, garlic salt, and pepper to information technology and put a can of peas and carrots in at that place too. Also I use Bob Evans ready mashed potatoes and use a smaller dish. so yummy!!
01/23/2005
This was neat! I was looking for something new to do with ground beefiness and it worked out well, I made a couple of changes (based on what I had on paw). I added some chopped onion to the ground beefiness when I browned it and used garlic & herb soup mix instead of onion soup mix.
06/25/2003
This was good-- I added a can of corn to the mashed potatoes, and some sprinkled cheese on top. I still felt the beef needed more flavor, nonetheless... I will play effectually with this recipe and run across what I come up with. But my fellow liked it, and he doesn't like much!
08/21/2011
This was the best thing I've ever tasted!! I did put a layer of shredded carrots and a can of string beans on the meat mixture and used garlic mashed boxed potatoes on top with cheese. It was sooooooo yummy! Thanks for the recipe!
05/24/2004
I dear this recipe! I dearest the beef onion mix and the noodles! I add together corn and make way more potatoes then called for, just always refer to the original recipe. My family loves it and then practise guests!
xi/19/2017
Both my hubby and I loved this recipe! This is definitely a keeper!

A great style to apply up leftover mashed potatoes. I didn't have beefiness with onion soup mix, and then I used a packet of onion soup mix and a beefiness boullion cube. I also added a can of corn. This was a tasty dish.
11/21/2005
So Piece of cake.. and tastes 10 times better so I thought it was going to. I made information technology with boxed potatoes.. and added a bit of cheese on acme :)
05/14/2003
this is type of recipe i love! i did double the pasta in it and add a can of mushrooms. similar to be able to adapt recipes...makes them GREAT!! at that place was very niggling left past the time we finished...merely 2 of united states of america and he's kind of picky! easy to fix subsequently working all day!!
11/22/2005
This is a dandy one!
07/10/2007
I also added corn, light-green beans and carrots to this mixture, and as I couldn't find beefiness onion soup, I used beef gravy along with other seasonings to flavor and thicken this. As for the Shepherd'southward Pie proper name comment, whenever made with beefiness, I've always heard information technology referred to as Cowboy Pie. I think that if yous were in England, Shepherd would be lamb but, just in U.s.a. beef is commonly used.
07/17/2007
This was and then succulent and easy! Grilled onions and cheese on summit makes it even more delicious! I used a 9X9 pan so at that place was volume to the dish & made it with mashed potatos not out of the box.
12/20/2007
This is one recipe that I didn't take to tweek. I doubled the recipe and it fit perfectly into the nine x 13 pan. I did add together green beans to the hamburger mix and cheese on acme. My family absolutely LOVED this one! YUM-O!!

This Dish was excellent. My hubby finished 2 huge plates of it!!!!

My family loves this recipe! Information technology is also very piece of cake to prepare!
07/12/2007
I made the recipe exactly as it was and information technology was expert. The noodles were cooked perfectly -- they were actually soft so I cannot imagine cooking them first. My family liked it -- information technology was quick and easy.
02/19/2003
Swell recipe! I love the versatility you have with it, co-ordinate to family unit taste or what'south on manus. Like others I added veggies and cheese. I am already thinking of what other options there are on additions to this. Thanks!
07/23/2005
I add together frozen mixed veggies also. This recipe is always a big hit.
07/23/2010
Love the base of this recipe. I but had the onion soup mix then I added iv bullion cubes. I also thought it needed some vegis so I added peas, carrots, green beans, and corn. I also added onion and garlic to the meat while it was cooking. I wanted a saucier dish and so I added 1 sm. tin can of tomato paste and a one/2 cup of ketchup, and a tbls. of prepared mustard. I had to add together an actress cup of h2o to the meat and mac mixture to allow everything to meld together. To the instant potatoes I added a pkg of Mc Cormicks 4 cheese potato seasoning. I topped it with a half loving cup of cornflake crumbs mixed with garlic table salt, parsley, pepper and a tbls. of oil. I took a motion picture before anybody finished devouring it. YUM! Thanks Cathy for inspiring me to even make dinner concluding night.
07/eighteen/2008
This is a really elementary recipe. I added corn on the top. My married man don't similar instant potatoes and fifty-fifty he liked it. :)
04/28/2011
This was actually easy and fast too. I made ii small changes. I doubled the noodles, and I made some actress potatoes. I was actually really suprised that it actually didn't need any actress seasoning. The soup packet was perfect. Cheers for a dandy weeknight recipe!
07/19/2009
Very tasty! I seasoned the hamburger a fleck w/ garlic pulverisation & the paprika while it cooked. I also added a tin of corn & a can of carrots to the mixture before putting in the baking dish. I topped w/ some shredded cheese, then the potatoes & cooked for 18 minutes - information technology is delish!
09/09/2010
Amazing!! My hubby asks me to brand this almost every dark. lol
12/31/2008
I followed Alissa's recommendations and my family loved this. I was worried the noodles would non melt in the oven so I did cook them a little longer on the stove acme and they were a bit over cooked and so I would recommend cooking them on the stove top for four-5 minutes as directed by the recipe.
